Why did Leslie die offstage?
- she died offstage because the director wanted a climax in the movie, so that he will get the audience thinking about how she dies. He might also want to make the movie a very sad one since jess did not see leslie die too.

Who represents the dark lord for
-jess
-Leslie
-yourself.

- For jess, the dark lord represents his father as he always gets scolding from his father. Jess wants the attention from his father but his father always pushes him away. This makes Jess want to impress his father to get attention but to no avail. While he is trying to impress his dad, he gets another scolding maybe because he did something wrong to his father. For example, like the one in the movie when he lost his dad’s key and he was sad that he couldn’t find it. This is why Jess’s father, represents his dark lord.

-As for Leslie, her dark lord is, friends . She had a lot of difficulties in making friends in her other school, thinking that she was a weird and strange girl. She was a;ways teased by the way she dressed, how she talks and what she thinks. In the movie, Jess was her only real friends who like her for who she was - a fun and adventurous girl. The other people in the school will just stare at her and make her feel as though she came from a foreign planet. This is why friends, represents the dark lord for Leslie.

-My dark lord is , darkness. It always gets me. Even when i'm in my room and about to sleep, the darkness that filled my room makes my mind think of a thousand thoughts. As what i believe, darkness can play with a person's mind, it can make you imagine the impossible. Then you will have to feel that you have to expect the impossible. I would have to go to sleep in order to chase those scary thoughts away. There was once when i was still a small child, i slept early since i was tired. My mother carried me into my room and i was sleeping there alone in the dark. When i woke up in the middle of the night, i could feel the soft and springy bed that was supporting my whole weight. I opened my eyes, but i couldn't see the difference in closing and opening my eyes at point of time. It was dark. So i cried and cried till my mother came in. Since then, i had been sleeping with the night light on.

Questions and Answers
Why did Leslie died offstage?

Leslie died offstage because the director does not want to show how and the way she died. The director wants the audience to have a full attention to the movie and he also wants the audience to guess and have their imagination running wild while watching the movie so it could make the movie much more interesting. The director decide to have some suspense in the movie for audience who have not read the book before the movie was released. The audience will obviously be curious on how she died.It could also be that the director was afraid that the actress 'Leslie' would get hurt or injured while doing the stunts. The stunts will surely have some risk and consequences since it involves the lake and the rope. When the actress was doing the stunt, she could get injured because there are stones, big tree trunks and the current waves of the water in the lake. The director spent a lot of money on the stunts. If the actress is injured, they could not continue their shoots or scenes and the movie could not be done in time and the movie will be released later. If it is released late,it will upset the 'movie lovers'.

What did the dark lord represent for Leslie?

Leslie friends in her old and new school excluding Jess represents the dark lord for Leslie. It could represent the dark lord because Leslie does not have many friends in the previous school and also the new school. In the movie,Leslie's father thanked Jess for being her friend and he also told Jess that Leslie does not have many friends. In school, she was laughed at because she does not have a television at home. She experienced being bullied and seeing people being bullied in school many times but she managed to get her revenge. The way she helps May Belle to get her revenge by writing a fake love note to Janice, the bully. She could be weird to some people in a sense of fashion. She always wears Jeans,T-shirts and high-cut shoes to school. On Easter, she wore a dress and high-cut shoes to the church which makes her look weird.

The dark lord represent his father for Jess. The reason for this is because Jess is afraid of his father. He is afraid because his father does not agree in anything Jess does. His father does not like Jess' hobby which is drawing and what Jess would like to be when he grew up which is an artist. His father foes not appreciate his drawings. He thought that Jess' ambition will not make Jess have a bright and great future being an artist. His father always scold him for every small thing he does.Like in the movie,Jess lost his father's keys and he scolded him for losing it.Jess told him he will find it but his father does not believe that he could find it.In the end Jess found them.He blames Jess for thing that he did not do an does not give Jess a chance to explain. His father rely on Jess to do all the house work.He never show love towards Jess and made their relationship not close and his father does not know Jess well.

What does the dark lord represent for me?

The dark lord represents the big and deep sea as I am afraid of sea creatures which is a jelly like substance.A good example is a jelly fish.I was 4 years old and I was swimming at east Coast Park.Suddenly, something in the water stung me.Then , my body starts to itch. The was when i started to hate swimming at the beach. When i was 5 years-old,I swim in at the beach and tried to avoid jellyfishes.I remembered when my father took me to the deeper side of the sea.My father promised to take care of me while we were in the water.Everything was okay,he did took care of me.Suddenly,a big and strong wave came and swept us away.I lost my father's grip. Then it happened.I started to drown.I was crying for help.I could not breathe properly.Suddenly, something pulled me from my leg.I was afraid, very afraid. Then, something grip me again from my hand and i suddenly realised i was in my father's arms.He saved me.That's the reason why i am afraid of deep sea.

Did you enjoy the movie or the novel?why?

I enjoyed the movie because I really could feel the emotion and the surrounding. The movie makes me feel like as if I am in that movie. The movie really touches me.The movie almost made me cry.The movie makes me feel like i am in the movie because of its great sound effect and also the quality of the movie is great. The sound effect always changes my mood. Its pictures is very clear and the story line is also logical except for the fictional characters. The movie is short but it tells us almost everything about the real story. We could feel the emotion because of the tone of the actors and actresses voice and also the facial expression.I did not really enjoyed the novel because while reading we have to use our own imagination and I do not have a great imagination.I love movies more than the novel. The novel take days to finished it while the movie only take about two hours. The novel is also boring because it does not have nice pictures in it.I did not cry when i read the book but i cry when i watched the movie. That really tells a lot.

1) Why did Leslie die offstage ?
Leslie die offstage because the target audience for Bridge to Terabithia is children and i guess for the director to film Leslie's death, that would be very unsuitable for the children.Children do not understand reality and acting and so,they might think that Leslie's death was real. This affects their psychology and they might have nightmares or worse, get traumatised about it.This is why Leslie die offstage.

2) What did the Dark Lord represent for (i) Leslie,(ii)Jess and (iii)yourself ?
(i) The Dark Lord represents loneliness for Leslie as that was what she feared the most. She feared being lonely and having no friends at all.She tries very hard to make friends but the other children thinks she is starnge and weird therefore, they isolate her. This makes her even lonely but still, she tries her best to make friends.

(ii)For Jess, the Dark Lord represents his father. As we know, his father barely communicates with him and Jess felt as if he has been neglected by his father.Jess thinks that his father shows more care and concern to the other girls than him.Jess wanted his father to be proud of him and he yearns for attention from his father. But his father seems as if he does not care about Jess and constantly picking on Jess's mistakes. This is why the Dark Lord for Jess is his father.

(iii)Dark Lord is something that you fear the most.To me,the Dark Lord represents death.I do fear death and i am sure that i am not the only one.The idea of you being dead, buried 6 feet under and you only got yourself. That alone gives me the chills.I am also sure that i have alot of sins and that makes it more scary.

3) Did you prefer the novel or the movie?why ?
I prefer the movie to the novel.I am the sort of person who cannot imagine such fiction imaginary things just by reading it and so,i do not really have that magical feeling when i read the novel. When i saw the movie,i finally understood what Leslie meant and how she viewed Bridge to Terabithia. It helped me in imagining the magical characters. It is a pity that Miss Bessie was not shown in the movie because I thought it would have been very cool to have a cow acting in a movie.Eventhough both the novel and the movie was good, the movie was better.

Why did Leslie die offstage?
I think that Leslie died offstage as Bridge to Terabithia is a children movie, it might not be appropriate to show a scene of how Leslie died. It might also be that when Leslie died, nobody even witnessed it so it is not possible to describe and show how Leslie died. Therefore, that is the reason why Leslie died offstage.

What does the Dark Lord represent for (i)Leslie?
To Leslie, I do not think that the Dark Lord represents anything in particular to Leslie. In Bridge to Terabithia, we can see that Leslie is a child with a vivid and wild imagination. To her, the Dark Lord is just one of her imaginations and to me she is not troubled by anyone or anything.

(ii)Jess?
To Jess, the Dark Lord would most probably represent his father. Both in the movie and novel we can see that the relationship between Jess and his father is not as good. Jess always tries to do his best in everything to impress his father as he has this mindset where his father thinks that Jess is not able to achieve anything and is not proud of anything he does. Instead, he would only spot Jess' weaknesses and the things he did not do right. The father does not take the extra effort to get to know his own son even better and built a stronger relationship with him. To Jess, his father is like a stranger who lives with him. We can tell by the way they talk to each other, there is not a sense of comfort between them and they are never open to each other when they are supposed to, as father and son.

(iv)me?
To me, I think that the Dark Lord represents Janice Avery. Janice Avery is known to have went into the woods where Terabithia is. Janice Avery is also known to be a big bully in school and almost everyone is afraid and dislike her. In the movie, she is seen as a mean person and could have represented the Dark Lord. She is mean in many ways. For example, she guards the girl's washroom and expects them to pay up in order to enter which is so unacceptable, she bullies other students like throwing bread at them and steals small girl's snacks. Therefore to me, the Dark Lord represents Janice Avery, the big, mean bully.

Do I prefer the movie or novel?
For me, I definitely prefer the movie to the novel. I think I enjoyed the movie alot. For me, I got to understand the story of Bridge to Terabithia even better after watching the movie itself. I guess, if I had not watched the movie, I would not have known that the Dark Lord even existed in the whole story. With that being proven, I guess that watching the movie gives me a better understanding of the whole story. I prefer the movie also because as I watched the movie, I could feel the sense of sadness, happiness and all kinds of emotions, not like when I read the novel. Actions definitely speak louder than words. I like the movie better as it gives me a clear concept on the relationships between the characters. The movie allows me to witness how the bridge was and all the other elements in the movie. Especially the Dark Lord. Since this is a movie full of imagination, to understand and to visualize it better, it is definitely better to watch the movie itself. So my final conclusion is, I prefer the movie more than the novel.

Thank you!

Difference between the movie and the novel
Movie
1) There was no Miss bessie.
2) Leslie bribed May Belle with Barbie dolls.
3) Jess received his race car as a birthday present.
4) Jess lost his dad's keys.
5) Leslie talked to a cleaner while Jess searched for Janice Avery's desk.
6) Jess punched Gary for making fun of Leslie's death.
Novel
1) There was Miss Bessie.
2) leslie bribed May Belle with new paper dolls.
3) Jess received his race car as a Christmas present.
4) Jess didn't lose his dad's keys.
5) Leslie talked to her science teacher while Jess searched for Janice Avery's desk.
6) Jess didn't punched Gary.
Why did Leslie died offstage in the movie?
- Leslie died offstage in the movie as the movie producer would not want to convey to the audience on how she died as that will destroy everything. Maybe, the movie producer wants the audience to think how she died. If he were to show how Leslie Burke died in the movie, there will also be no suspense and climax in the show.

Who is the dark lord to Jess?
- The dark lord to Jess would be his father. His father does not exhibit his care and concern for Jess but instead, he would be reprimanding Jess for his actions. Jess was desperate to impress his father but it turned out to be a failure. In the movie, when Jess freed the animal that was trapped in the animal trap, his dad told him that this is not one of his drawings anymore. Thus, Jess was stunned upon hearing that and was feeling really down. This is the reason why Jess's father represents the dark lord.

Who is the dark lord to Leslie?
- For Leslie, the dark lord represents her friends. As we all know, she is new to the school and the school atmosphere would definitely be different. Hence, it would be quite difficult for Leslie to make new friends instantly. All the girls in the school thought that Leslie was a strange and a peculiar girl due to the way she dresses. According to the movie, all her friends roared with laughter when she blurted out that she did not own a television. Because of this, everyone found her really weird. Thus, her friends represent the dark lord to Leslie.

Who is the dark lord to myself?
- As for me, my dark lord is the dead, bundled up in white cloth. I have never seen one, in real life but the image of it in movies, freaks me out. Its all bundled up in white cloth and it has a tie knot at the top of their head. That sight is totally scary. I know that i will definitely be facing it one day or another, but, thats my phobia and i cannot help it. Thus, i think the dead, bundled up in white cloth is the dark lord to me.

Which do you prefer? The movie or the novel? Why?
- To me, i preferred the movie to the novel as the movie is much more interesting than the novel. Reading just the book was really fun but somehow, the great feeling was not there as i could not watch how the story goes along. The movie was much better as it involves more drama and more actions than in the book. The movie also contains more conflicts, suspense and climax. When I watched the movie, i had a variety of feelings. When Leslie died, I was experiencing the sorrowful feeling. When Jess and Leslie were enjoying themselves, it was the joyful and happy feeling. When Janice Avery threw the bread at Jess's shirt, it was the pissed feeling. When reading the book, it was only the same feeling over and over again. By watching the movie also, we can compute what really had happened in the novel and we could even understand better. When reading the book, the questions that were racing in my mind about the novel could not be answered. Hence, I enjoyed the movie much better than the novel!
